Kingsway Baptist Church (KBC) is located in South Africa in Johannesburg, in a poor area called Montclare. KBC meets at a ‘community centre’ that seems somewhat out of place for the area that it is situated in. The centre is called ‘The Danie van Zyl centre’, and is fancy or up market looking for Montclare. The centre has a large building that has two very large halls and four smaller halls that are rented out for weddings and other functions. To one side, though still connected to the main building, is the creche. Which has about four classrooms some offices and an enclosed play area for the children. The centre’s grounds are large with a few tennis courts, a soccor field and a large parking area.
KBC meets in one of the rooms within the creche. The room is square, approximately six metres by 6 metres, with a little kitchenette that has a small sink cupboard and counter. About a year and a half ago we were given permission to remove a large window that looked out into an open grass area just off the creches play area. We put a double glass door leading out to the smaller grass area. A concrete wall was put up section off the outer area from the creches play area. We also put a gate in the wall surrounding the open area, giving us our own enterance from the main parking lot. All in all we now have almost exclusive use of that room and a piece of the creche’s play area for KBC.
Montclare being a typically poor area, people of all ages are easily accessible. Unless the weather is very unpleasant there are always people on the streets.
KBC is an independent Baptist church in fellowship with other churches of like faith. It is not affiliated with a union or council of churches, nor is it sympathetic with the Ecumenical or Charismatic movements. The Church is not affiliated or aligned with the Baptist World Alliance because of:
- Their denial of or vague stand towards many of the articles of belief contained in KBC’s full statement of faith.
- Their increasing emphasis upon the ‘social gospel’ rather than personal conversion.
- Their sympathies with the World Council of Churches which, for example, is shown by the Baptist World Alliance leaders being members of the Central Planning Committee of the W.C.C.
- Their weak to indistinct stand towards communism.
KBC see’s their purpose in Monteclare as fulfilling the Lord’s ‘Great Commission’ in Matthew 28:18-20
Matthew 28:18-20
18 “ And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
In the above passage the Lord Jesus commission not only his disciples at the time, but all believers of all ages to come, to have not only their people in their immediate area and country in their outreach plans, But the whole world. As the Lord clarifies in Acts 1:8.
Acts 1:8
8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Then in Ephesian 4 as the local church is described:
Ephesians 4:11-16
11 “And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ:
14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.”
- V11/ Having certain gifted men supplied by the Lord (apostles and prophets having fulfilled their purpose have ceased to be given by the Lord to local churches)
- V12/ These gifted men have their gifts for the “perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:”
- V13/ To bring the born again in the congregation to unit of the faith by teaching. And the same to Christ likeness.
- V14/ That all may be mature having discernment.
- V15/ Declaring God’s truth in love (the opposite of cold fundementalism), Christ being their Head, stiving to acknowledge Him in all their ways (Prov. 3:6).
- V16/ Growing together where each is able to minister to their fellow saints in KBC.
