The Holy Spirit Illuminates The Truths Of The Bible
John 16:12-15
12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.
13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
The Lord Jesus, before He left our world, promised that He would send the Holy Spirit Whom He called the ‘Comforter’, and the ‘Spirit of truth’ in this passage. The Lord told His disciples that He had many things to say to them, but they were not able to ‘bear them’ yet. They would not be able to understand them yet. The promised ‘Spirit of truth’ would be their guide ‘into all truth’. The Holy Spirit would not only reveal these truths, but would also open their understanding of the truths. These truths that they would later receive, would be the doctrines and purpose of the then future Church.
Just as the apostles needed the Holy Spirit to open their understanding of the truths of Scripture, so do we today. The disciples had to wait until they received the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost before they could benefit by His illuminating ministry. From the day of Pentecost on, everyone who receives Christ has the Holy Spirit indwelling them (Romans 8:9). And so each born again believer has God’s illuminator living within them.
It is now for us to rely on the Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth as we carefully study the Bible.
1 Corinthians 2:7-13
7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:
8 Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.
11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.
12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
Eph 4:17-21
17 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,
18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:
19 Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.
20 But ye have not so learned Christ;
21 If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:
1Jn 2:27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.
The Holy Spirit Will Lead The Believer Who Will Follow Him
The bible is available and the Holy Spirit is not neglecting His responsibility. The problem today is of so many doing that which is right in his own eyes. This has come as a result of believers not relying on the Holy Spirit for illumination as we are meant to. Today we have the same problem that Israel had after the deaths of Joshua and the princes of Israel, that ruled in the life time of Joshua. During the times of the judges of Israel, as recorded in the book of Judges, we have the following revelation of the spiritual state of Israel given twice:
Jdg 17:6 “In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes.” (See also Judges 21:25)
The Holy Spirit WILL guide us into all truth if we will earnestly seek it!
