'GETTING TO KNOW GOD' STUDY

(This page is the main page that contains the Getting To Know God study. As we further develop each characteristic we move that characteristic on to it's own page. So if you find a characteristic missing, please look for it in our sites menu system.  As here demonstrated  - Edification > Almighty God Wants Us To Know Him > Study On Knowing God> 'characteristics new page')

Is Declared To Be

Light

Isa 60:19; Jam 1:17; 1Jo 1:5

1 John 1:5  This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

Physical Light

Isaiah 60:19  The sun shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: but the LORD shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory.

In heaven the Lord Himself will supply lighting, and so no sun will be needed. Stars and moon will not be needed because there is no night in Heaven.

Spiritual Light

James 1:17  Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

Nothing is hidden from Him. The lost sinner cannot hide from the Lord.

Righteous deeds will not be unnoticed. Wickedness will not be hidden.

  • He brings light into the world (i.e. Reveals truth about Himself, mans purpose, mans need to be save, and all truth about life in this world that He created.)
  • He gives light about wickedness and error.

(See also Psa 27:1, Psa 36:9, Psa 84:11; Joh 1:4, Joh 1:9, Joh 8:12, Joh 9:5, Joh 12:35, Joh 12:36; 1Ti 6:16; Rev 21:23, Rev 22:5)

Love

1Jo 4:8; 1Jo 4:16

1 John 4:8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

1 John 4:16  And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.

Invisible

Job 23:8; Job 23:9; Joh 1:18; Joh 5:37; Col 1:15; 1Ti 1:17

Job 23:8-9

8  Behold, I go forward, but he is not there; and backward, but I cannot perceive him:
9  On the left hand, where he doth work, but I cannot behold him: he hideth himself on the right hand, that I cannot see him:

John 1:18 No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

John 5:37  And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.

Colossians 1:15  Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:

1 Timothy 1:17  Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

Note:

As is shown, on this site, in the study on “Knowing God,” that it is important to the Lord that the individual chooses the Lord as his God. Chooses Him instead of ignoring Him and choosing the temporary pleasures and distractions that the world offers. If the Lord were not invisible, what choice would there be? Could anyone resist choosing the Lord when faced with Almighty God in all His glory? For this reason it is important that the Lord is not visible. So that the lost sinner with enough illumination to know all that he needs to know. All that he needs to know to make the ‘obvious’ choice of choosing the Lord as his God, or choosing to stay in his sin and rejecting the Lord.

Unsearchable

Job 11:7; Job 37:23; Psa 145:3; Isa 40:28; Rom 11:33

Job 11:7  Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?

Job 37:23  Touching the Almighty, we cannot find him out: he is excellent in power, and in judgment, and in plenty of justice: he will not afflict.

Psalms 145:3  Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable.

Isaiah 40:28  Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.

Romans 11:33  O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!

Incorruptible

Rom 1:23

Romans 1:23  And changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

Eternal

Deu 33:27; Psa 90:2; Rev 4:8-10

Deuteronomy 33:27  The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.

Psalms 90:1-2

1  A Prayer of Moses the man of God. Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations.
2  Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.

Revelation 4:8-10

8  And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.
9  And when those beasts give glory and honor and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth forever and ever,
10  The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying,

Immortal

1Ti 1:17; 1Ti 6:16

1 Timothy 1:17 Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

1 Timothy 6:14-16

14  That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ:
15  Which in his times he shall show, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;
16  Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honor and power everlasting. Amen.

Omnipotent

Gen 17:1; Exo 6:3

Genesis 17:1  And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.

Exodus 6:3  And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them.

Omniscient

Psa 139:1-6; Pro 5:21

Psalms 139:1-6

1  To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me.
2  Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.
3  Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.
For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether.
5  Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.
6  Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.

Proverbs 5:21  For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings.

Omnipresent

Psa 139:7; Jer 23:23

Psa 139

1  To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me.
2  Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.
3  Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.
4  For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether.
5  Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.
6. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.
7  Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?
8.  If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.
9  If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;
10  Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.
11  If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me.
12  Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.
13  For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb.
14  I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.
15  My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
16  Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.
17  How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them!
18  If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee.
19  Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God: depart from me therefore, ye bloody men.
20  For they speak against thee wickedly, and thine enemies take thy name in vain.
21  Do not I hate them, O LORD, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee?
22  I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies.
23  Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:
24  And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Jer 23:23

Am I a God at hand, saith the LORD, and not a God afar off?

Immutable

Psa 102:26; Psa 102:27; Jam 1:17

We change. Sometimes for the better, and sometimes for the worst. Everyone goes through changes. We must. Change is natural and good. We learn more and more and so are able to do more and more. We develop through from:

  • Baby to toddler
  • Toddler to kid
  • Kid to teen ager
  • Teen ager to young adult
  • Young adult to adult
  • Adult to elderly

These are natural changes. And are good benificial changes. We also call these changes ‘maturity’.

There are also negitive changes:

A change of friends could lead to bad influence. Leading to bad behaviour. Bad behaviour will lead to a change in our character that is negitive.

This tendency to change is what we know and are used to. We expect change – hoping that the changes we go through will be good for us. And not foolish changes we will regret.

This natural change effects everyone we know except the Lord …

The following verses shows yet another fundamental difference between us and the Lord. While we change, the Lord has never changed, nor will He ever change.

Psalms 102:26-27

26  They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed:
27  But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end.

James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.

Malachi 3:6 For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

This means that if we learn what the Bible tells us about the Lord. Which was completed about 2000 years ago. Then all that it says about the Lord then is still true today. So all effort to learn what the Lord was like so many many years ago is still a valuble study today. What we learn of Him being like so many years ago will still tell us what He is like today. And what He will be like a million years from now.

Only-wise

Rom 16:27; 1Ti 1:17

Romans 16:27  To God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ forever. Amen.

1 Timothy 1:17  Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

Glorious

Exo 15:11; Psa 145:5

Exodus 15:11  Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?

Psalms 145:5  I will speak of the glorious honor of thy majesty, and of thy wondrous works.

Most High

Psa 83:18; Act 7:48

Psalms 83:18  That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth.

Acts 7:48-49

48  Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet,
49  Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest?

Perfect

Mat 5:48

Matthew 5:48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

Thayer Definition:

  • brought to its end, finished
  • wanting nothing necessary to completeness
  • perfect
  • that which is perfect
    • consummate human integrity and virtue
    • of men
    • full grown, adult, of full age, mature

Part of Speech: adjective

God is perfect in that He is complete in every way. He doesn’t need to grow or develop or improve in any way.

We are commanded to be perfect as God is perfect. My responcibility is to fulfill my life that I have been given. I’m to see life the way He does. I’m to value what He values. I’m to be against what He is against. All in all I’m to learn to approach life as the Lord does. I’m to take His lead on everything.

The process of getting to be like Him could be called maturing, or becoming perfect (complete). While I’m unlike Him I’m immature, incomplete, or imperfect.

Genesis 17:1-2

1  And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.
2  And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.

Abram was told by the Lord that he, Abram, had to perfect. Meaning that he had to submit totally to the Lord and live life the Lords way, with His values. Any less commitment would not be acceptable as Abram would be imperfect. And although Abram failed miserably at various stages of his life. In his approach to life, in his thinking he held the Lord as supreme. He had a strong desire to be perfect before the Lord. And as the Lord could see all of Abram’s life from beginning to end. A life of mixed success and failure at being perfect before Him, the Lord accepted Abram’s commitment to Him.

A believer will never, in this life, come to the maturity where he will never sin again. To be perfect before the Lord means to strive, with the enabling of the Holy Spirit, to keep from sinning. And then when sin inevitably is committed, the perfect believer confesses that sin to the Lord. Then believing His word that He forgives us when we confess, carries on walking with the Lord. Not allowing the sin committed to further hinder my walk that day.

Deuteronomy 18:13 Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God.

Psalms 37:34-38

34  Wait on the LORD, and keep his way, and he shall exalt thee to inherit the land: when the wicked are cut off, thou shalt see it.
35  I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay tree.
36  Yet he passed away, and, lo, he was not: yea, I sought him, but he could not be found.
37  Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace.
38  But the transgressors shall be destroyed together: the end of the wicked shall be cut off.

Colossians 1:28  Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:

Holy

Psa 99:9; Isa 5:16

Psalms 99:9 Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at his holy hill; for the LORD our God is holy.

Isaiah 5:16 But the LORD of hosts shall be exalted in judgment, and God that is holy shall be sanctified in righteousness.

Leviticus 11:43-45

43  Ye shall not make yourselves abominable with any creeping thing that creepeth, neither shall ye make yourselves unclean with them, that ye should be defiled thereby.

44  For I am the LORD your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

45  For I am the LORD that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.

Just

Deu 32:4; Isa 45:21

Deuteronomy 32:1-7

1  Give ear, O ye heavens, and I will speak; and hear, O earth, the words of my mouth.

2  My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distill as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass:

3  Because I will publish the name of the LORD: ascribe ye greatness unto our God.

4  He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.

5  They have corrupted themselves, their spot is not the spot of his children: they are a perverse and crooked generation.

6  Do ye thus requite the LORD, O foolish people and unwise? is not he thy father that hath bought thee? hath he not made thee, and established thee?

7  Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations: ask thy father, and he will show thee; thy elders, and they will tell thee.

Moses rebukes the children of Israel as he declares the greatness of the Lord (v3), that He is just and right. He magnifies the Lord before children of Israel of whom many still don’t understand the Lord. And their need of Him. Of how foolish it is to not give Him the glory that is due Him. They are councled to concider all He has done before this day. To ask their parents and their elders. Those who would have been just short of manhood when the Lord rejected the adults of Israel for their unbelief.

They are to think carefully about Him. They will see that they will not be able to fault Him. Only be greatful to Him for all that He has done. And now to yield to Him in order to continue to enjoy the personal attention of Almighty God to them as a nation.

Isaiah 45:20-22

20  Assemble yourselves and come; draw near together, ye that are escaped of the nations: they have no knowledge that set up the wood of their graven image, and pray unto a god that cannot save.

21  Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the LORD? and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Savior; there is none beside me.

22  Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.

A wonderful Scripture where the Lord, through Isaiah, reminds Israel that they are in the best place with Him. Other nations lack knowledge about Him, and prove that by the graven images that they make and worship. They pray to gods that cannot save!

Israel are to be focused in their lives. They are not to lose sight of the huge advantage that they have in being in covenant with the one true God. Israel are meant to be an example to the world to draw them to the worship of the one true God. But even Israel loses focus. But this does not stop the Lord calling the world to “look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.”

In this passionate plea, the Lord lists the important characteristic – that He is a just God. Clearly this is not what anyone around the world at that time experienced in their false religions.

True

Jer 10:10; Joh 17:3

John 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

The word ‘true’ is used of God to distinguish Him from the other gods that some people call true gods. Here the Lord Jesus is making the statement that there is a God that is the ‘only true God’. And that the eternal life that He has come to give is ‘knowing the only true God.’ Those of the religions of the world have beliefs about their god/s. And they know about those gods, but none of them know those gods ‘personalities’. With the Lord it is very different. He is the only true God, and we can know Him. Not just know about Him, but know His personality.

Jer. 10

Here the Lord addresses the ‘home-made’ gods of the other nations. The simplicity of the gods is shocking, even though they have gold and expensive clothing covering them. They are made from a piece of wood cut from a tree and carved with an axe.The foolishness of worshipping something you have made is addressed.

While there are still some who worship gods that they have made (or someone made), this is not done where most of us can witness it. We have other things that are gods to us in our modern cultures.

The hand made gods of ancient times has the equivelant, in some sense, in everything that we put ahead of the Lord in our list of priorities. Many would like the Lord to be first, but in daily practice He comes after certain things that people value more than they value the Lord.

  • One’s independence
  • One’s family
  • One’s reputation amongst friends – people will do just about anything to get the acceptance that they desire from friends.
  • One’s abilities
    • Academic
    • Sport
    • Ability to make or build thing
  • One’s possesions
  • One’s self – this is the toughest one to deal with. Pride doesn’t want to yield completely to anything or anyone.

To give the Lord first place ahead of me in my life:

  • I cannot choose my own friend without checking with the Lord
  • I cannot behave the way I want to.
  • I’m not the master of my own time
  • I cannot choose my life’s partner without considering the Lord
  • I cannot choose my life’s carreer without considering the Lord.
  • I cannot decide what Iwant to believe about the Lord and the Christian faith. I must ask the Lord to help me understand what He says in the Bible about Himself and the Faith.

Does it sound tough to have the Lord as your God? There are times that it is easy and other times that we will find it very difficult. But in both ‘times’ the Lord is there to help us get through what we find difficult. Between the Holy Spirit and the Bible we will be taught and led to be mature in our walk with the Lord and our knowledge. So that we will be secure and very content because we will be able to say, I know my God and that He will NEVER abandon me. He WILL take care of me. He IS keeping me a place with Him in Heaven. I KNOW these things no matter what happens in live.

The person worshipping false gods, and the modern person who is caught up in putting things and people ahead of God in their lives, don’t know the happiness and security of being looked after and provided for (in this life and the next) by the one TRUE God.

Upright

Psa 25:8; Psa 92:15

Psalms 25:8  Good and upright is the LORD: therefore will he teach sinners in the way.

Psalms 92:12-15
12  The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.
13  Those that be planted in the house of the LORD shall flourish in the courts of our God.
14  They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing;
15  To show that the LORD is upright: he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.

Webster’s definition:

Honest; just; not deviating from correct moral principles; as an upright man. Job 1.

(The following points are taken from Torry’s study on ‘Uprightness’)

God is perfect in uprightness

In Isaiah 26 Israel’s restoration to the promised land is described. Israel’s focus, according to Isaiah’s description of that day, is more on the Lord than their actual entry into the promised land. They have realised that their safty and joys in life lie with the Lord. The Lord and not the religion or the land that He has given them.

Those who have lived ‘high’ in the world, while Israel were brought low, are now themselves brought low – humbled. V7/ “the way of the just is uprightness: thou most upright, …” Referring to the Lord. This has always been the Lord way. To make His own like Himself. He is the most upright, and so Israel must be upright.

God has pleasure in uprightness

1 Chronicles 29:17 I know also, my God, that thou triest the heart, and hast pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of mine heart I have willingly offered all these things: and now have I seen with joy thy people, which are present here, to offer willingly unto thee.”

There are two important lessons here that is applicable to our ‘uprightness’ study:

  1. That the Lord has pleasure in ‘uprightness.’ Uprightness is a quality that the Lord either finds or does not find as He looks at and tries (proves) the heart.
  2. The truth that the Lord “… triest the heart, …” This means that the Lord doesn’t only look at our actions, but also at our hearts. To see what our thoughts and motives are towards Him. To see whether our actions and words are upright (honest).

The following verses show the Lord ‘trying the hearts of people’:

1 Chronicles 28:9 And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off forever.

Deuteronomy 8:2 And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or not.

1 Samuel 16:7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.

Psalms 7:9 Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end; but establish the just: for the righteous God trieth the hearts and reins.

Psalms 51:6 Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.

Proverbs 16:2 All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits.

Proverbs 21:2 Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts.

Jeremiah 17:10 I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Revelation 2:23 And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.

So it is clear that the Lord is interested in our inner thoughts and motives. And He looks and even ‘tries’, or tests our sincerity. Meaning that He allows us to go through experiences that shows what is in our hearts.

Our texts for this stage of the study on ‘uprightness’ declares that when the Lord examines and puts our hearts to the test. That He takes pleasure in discovering an upright heart.

God created man in uprightness

Ecclesiastes 7:29 Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.

This is easy to understand. The Lord made Adam and Eve sinless, therefore they were upright before they fell in sin.

This made the need for a Saviour, because man couldn’t have life with the Lord. So sin needed to be dealt with so that man could be made upright once again. And he and the Lord could again fellowship.

UPRIGHTNESS SHOULD BE IN …

Heart

2Ch 29:34; Psa 125:4;

2 Chronicles 29:34 But the priests were too few, so that they could not flay all the burnt offerings: wherefore their brethren the Levites did help them, till the work was ended, and until the other priests had sanctified themselves: for the Levites were more upright in heart to sanctify themselves than the priests.

It could be that the priests, used to the service they did, did not see ministry as a privelage as they should have. While the Levites called to help, saw the ministry opportunity as an enormous privilage. Spiritual things were still held high in there hearts – as it should. So when it came to sanctifying themselves for service, their hearts were found to be more upright than the priests.

Speech

Isaiah 33:15 He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from seeing evil

Speak truth …

·                 Don’t lie

·                 Don’t with-hold part of truth deceitfully

·                 Don’t flatter for advantage

·                 Speak to edify

·                 Speak to others as you understand Christ would speak to them

Walk

Proverbs 14:2 He that walketh in his uprightness feareth the LORD: but he that is perverse in his ways despiseth him.

Perfect honesty is only possibly when you know that it is always safe to do what you know to be right.

Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

In the above two verse we are told walking upright in life is a sign of fearing the LORD, and that fearing the LORD is the beginning of wisdom. Knowing the LORD is needed if I am to fear the LORD.

The believer who is walking upright in his life is doing so against the trend which is to walk in wickedness. He has to purpose in his mind to do so, it does not come naturally – nor easily. He also has to rely on the Lord for success. Our verse (Pro. 14:2) is of the deep respect that one must have for the Lord, in order to choose to exercise discipline to ensure uprightness in one’s walk with the Lord.
